WHAT IS THE PHELPS PLACEMENT OFFICE?

The Construction Management program at Colorado State University is fortunate to have a strong in-house placement program for its students upon graduation and as part of summer work experiences and internships.  Named after 1951 graduate, Joseph Phelps, the Phelps Placement Office (PPO) assists students throughout their academic careers with career services and job placement.  During their academic career, Construction Management students have the requirement and opportunity of obtaining internship (full-time structured work experience, during the summer or 6-month semester/summer), and work experience (part- or full-time work, summer or semester) positions with a variety of construction companies and organizations.  The PPO also assists graduating students and alumni with in-house interviews, bi-annual Career Fairs, and the publication of a Graduate Resume Book.  Additionally, CareerRam is always a good resource for any sort of position announcement.

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN ON-CAMPUS SENIOR RECRUITING?

A period of four (4) weeks is set aside each semester for on-campus, in-house interviews.  Companies are invited to visit Guggenheim Hall each semester and hold informational sessions and/or interviews for graduating students.  Interview dates are on a first-come, first-serve basis with the scheduling of up to three (3) informational sessions nightly (Monday – Thursday; 6:00p.m., 7:00p.m., and 8:00p.m. start times) and as rooms are available each day (Monday – Friday).

  • Fall 2008 term begins September 3 – October 10 and will continue through October 10 -24

HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM?

The internship program can be viewed as an investment by the sponsor company.  Participating companies spend time and energy to develop skills and abilities of interns.  At the same time, the sponsor receives the professional services of the intern, perhaps to be continued on a permanent basis.

All Construction Management undergraduate students are required to complete 12-weeks of internship in the construction industry, following their 500 hour work experience requirement, and will register and receive three (3) credit hours for satisfactory completion.  Some students will opt to do a 24-week internship and will receive six (6) credit hours for satisfactory completion.  All internships are full-time employment and students must be of at least Junior standing in the Construction Management program.  Most 12-week internships will be during the summer months.  Those students completing a 24-week internship will take a semester off from coursework and work that term in addition to a summer term.

The PPO will assist in placing students on internship via the Career Fair or during a week of on-campus interviews each semester, or the student may contact the PPO with a requested placement site.  Compensation and possible travel expenses will be negotiated between the student and sponsor.  Generally, sponsor companies who participate in on-campus interviews are given six (6) interviews for the intern position(s) they have available.  The PPO will match students and companies based upon the student’s interests and amount of experience and the requests of the company.  During the scheduled interview week, industry representatives will interview students and, subsequently, make job offers.

  • Internship Interview Week: October 13-17, 2008 (for Fall 2008, 24-week interns).
