The duration of the internship shall be no less than 12-weeks and 480 hours during the registered academic term for the student to receive a final grade. Most internships are during the summer months with work starting in May and completing in August. It is possible to complete internship credits during the fall or spring terms, but the minimum weeks/hours requirement must still me met.

Learning Objectives for the Student

Learning objectives of the Phelps Internship Placement Program include the following:

  • To enhance students’ “people” skills, including communication, listening and logical thinking.
  • To familiarize students with the construction industry and the facility acquisition process of planning, design, and field operations.
  • To introduce students to the complex inter-relationships which exist between the various tasks and participants on a construction project.
  • To expose students to the numerous management functions which must be performed within a construction organization.
  • To aid students in acquiring specific job skills which will enhance their value to employers and the industry when they begin their construction careers.

Placement Process
The PPO will assist in placing students on internship via the Career Fair or during on-campus interviews each semester, or the student may contact the PPO with a requested placement site. Compensation and possible travel expenses will be negotiated between the student and sponsor. Students must have proper documentation to work within the United States and sponsors may require pre-employment drug testing.  Should the student request assistance in their internship placement they will be part of the interview process described below. Should the student request a placement site of their own they must contact the PPO to determine the site’s eligibility in the program.

Interview Process

Students are required to attend both an Orientation and Course Requirements meetings the semester before their internship. After the Orientation meeting (usually in the first few week of each term), the student will prepare and submit a resume and a Learning Standards Worksheet to the internship office by the assigned due date. The internship office will match students and companies based upon the student’s interests and amount of experience and the requests of the company. During the scheduled interview week, industry representatives will interview students and, subsequently, make job offers.
