Historic Preservation Emphasis

Plan A Thesis | Plan B Professional Paper

While new construction will always be central to the construction industry, work on existing buildings is a growing segment of the industry.  In particular, buildings that are either being restored or rehabilitated for adaptive reuse require specialized knowledge and skills by the construction professional.  Students in the Historic Preservation emphasis can come from such diverse fields as history, art, architecture, or urban studies, as well as more technical backgrounds.Course work /includes the traditional aspects of construction management, supplementing this with greater attention to philosophical and management issues in preservation, and preservation technology.  Graduate students in this emphasis have opportunities for training and research opportunities with the Architectural Preservation Institute (API).  The API engages in applied research, planning and training at both the building and the community level.
