Industry Research Wish List
One of CMARC missions is to be responsive to the needs of the construction industry and our society by creating an environment that supports learning and innovation. During the Spring of 2003, CMARC conducted a study to collect the ten most important challenges facing our industry. The objective of the study is to provide our graduate students the opportunity to perform applied research and provide solutions that impact the future of our industry. The study was performed by Mr. Brian Gravitt and Dr. Scott Griffin. The following is a list of the top ten issues identified by the participants of the survey:
- Insurance and bonding issues. Most contractors are having trouble even finding a company that will still write them, let alone the huge premium increases.
- Mold problems in multi-unit complexes. The legal issues of who is responsible for this problem.
- Technology Integration-Both in the office and into the field setting. Knowing what software to buy to best fit company needs and objectives
- Planning/Meetings-How much time is necessary for a meeting?
- Industry perception among high school-aged people. Getting students interested in the trades.
- Craft training-keeping talented craftsmen in the field doing their trades.
- Lack of Heavy/Civil curriculum in schools. Industry complains of the lack of this area being taught in major construction programs.
- Problems keeping talented individuals in the field positions. Mobility issues with family and friends.
- Governmental interaction-Growth control issues being enforced by city officials.
- Environmental regulations-regulations and laws continue to cause challenges for this industry.
